CERTIFYING UNDERGRADS AS MORAL COURAGE MENTORS

Here's the proof that Moral Courage skills equip higher ed to turn heated issues into healthy conversations.

Now imagine certifying undergrads as Moral Courage Mentors for their campuses. This is the journey they take:

PHASE 1 (IN PERSON)

Your institution brings Irshad Manji or another of our team members to campus. There, we lead a gamified workshop for up to 200 undergrads at a time.

In this highly interactive and utterly unscripted experience, participants learn — then apply — the 5 core skills of Moral Courage.

The workshop can be combined with a keynote to the wider community, as well as other activities that make for a memorable visit.

After Phase 1, a self-selected cohort of students signs up for Phase 2.

PHASE 2 (IN PERSON OR VIRTUAL)

Participants learn how to present our award-winning 30-minute documentary, Mississippi Turning, to fellow students. This film follows two young people who deeply disagree about an emotional issue. One of them uses the skills of Moral Courage to create common ground even as she stands her ground. That's when things get interesting...

PHASE 3 (CAPSTONE)

Working with a faculty or staff advisor, Mentor-candidates will screen Mississippi Turning on campus. The audiences can be undergrad classes or student clubs or even peers at special watch parties.

After screening the film, Mentor-candidates will lead a discussion about it with viewers. During that discussion, they'll conversationally teach the Moral Courage skill set and share their own Moral Courage story — a story that we guide them to craft and deliver.

In that way, Undergrad Mentors will discover the power of authenticity for building trust.

BOTTOM LINE

Undergrad Moral Courage Mentors:

  • help themselves and their peers improve mental health by learning to replace anxiety with curiosity.

  • teach fellow students how to be heard, even by those who disagree with them.

  • become super-valuable for a skills-driven economy that needs people who do what AI can’t: build and sustain the teamwork that comes from collaborating across differences. To that end, graduates of this program receive a framed certificate along with a digital version that they can post for potential employers.
