Led by The New York Times bestselling author, Prof. Irshad Manji, and behavioral scientist Allison Gerrard, the Moral Courage Project has a vision for today’s workplace: we’re building a diverse community that mentors people to engage productively about polarizing issues. These “Moral Courage Mentors” serve the organizations that employ them — companies, universities, and K12 schools.
It’s a tool kit that equips people to turn heated issues into healthy conversations and sustained teamwork. How? By building communication skills that foster empathy — and, crucially, practicing those skills so they become habits. After all, habits are the pillars of culture.
To infuse your organization with the habits that bring people together, we’ve created a journey that coworkers take together. At the end of it, your employees will have their own Moral Courage Mentors who are trusted peers.
WAIT. WHAT’S MORAL COURAGE?
THE MORAL COURAGE JOURNEY
PHASE 1:
As a cohort, employees take the Moral Courage online course.
Your organization enrolls 50-100 people in our pre-recorded, resource-rich online course. Its core lesson: that a shared sense of belonging comes from respecting divergent viewpoints, not just different identities. Participants learn the skills to:
-
See themselves and others as more than “victim” or “victor” groups.
-
Recognize that empathy is a smarter, more constructive emotion than feeling offended.
-
Ask questions out of curiosity, not judgment.
-
Hear rather than fear varied opinions, values, ideas, and interpretations.
-
Draw the best from multiple perspectives to become innovative problem-solvers.
While participants move through the course individually, they all agree to finish it by a particular date. Shortly after that date, they come together for our habit-forming workshop, “Practice Makes Painless.”™
PHASE 2:
Engage in deliberate practice and track progress
Cohort members attend our LIVE virtual workshop to practice the Moral Courage skills taught by our online course. Why practice them? Because for any skill to “stick,” it needs to become a habit. That means applying it repeatedly.
We make it fun. First, we pair up participants so they can support each other. Next, we give them a structured plan embedded with games. That way, it’s painless to practice their skills for a few minutes each week over four months.
Throughout this time, we use our top-shelf tools to evaluate everyone’s progress. These assessments clarify who goes on to become a Certified Moral Courage Mentor for all of your people.
PHASE 3:
Certify and amplify your Moral Courage Mentors
In this final phase, we identify those participants who’ve made the most progress. Then your organization sends at least four of them through the Moral Courage Mentor training and certification program.
Certified Mentors are in-house unifiers as well as cultural catalysts, teaching more of your talent the skills of courageous collaboration year-round.
Plus, they belong to our global network of Moral Courage Mentors, a community that we curate and support so every member continues learning, growing, and contributing.
